The Sonata is Hyundai’s entry in the competitive midsize sedan segment that originally debuted in 1989 and receives styling and performance updates for 2009. Sonata's sales increased by 25 percent for the redesigned 1995 model and the fifth-generation Sonata debuted for the 2006 model year with an all-new look that was specifically designed for the American market.
The 2009 Hyundai Sonata receives exterior and interior updates, including new headlights, taillights, bumper fascias, body-side moldings and alloy wheels. Inside, drivers will find an updated center console, a new instrument panel, and an upgraded audio system with USB auxiliary inputs and an available GPS navigation system with a high-resolution display and touch-screen interface. Two more powerful engines are offered with the Theta II 2.4-liter 4-cylinder producing 175 horsepower and 168 lb-ft of torque with fuel economy of 22/32 mpg city/highway. The updated Lambda 3.3-liter V6 delivers 249 horsepower and 229 lb-ft of torque with fuel economy of 19/29 mpg city/highway
